Alan D. Garely, MD, FACOG, FACS

Mount Sinai South Nassau

Year started working as Chair: 2012

Who inspired you to pursue the career you have today?
I had five mentors in succession (I consider myself very lucky). First was during residency with my Chief of Gynecology, Joseph Barresi. Next was during my first fellowship, with Richard Scotti. Third was my second fellowship and my first partner, Thomas Elkins. Then my next two bosses, Dev Maulik and Michael Brodman. These guys were just first-class all around.

What is the best advice you can give to someone who just started their career? Be a great listener and be as direct as possible.

What helped prepare you the most for becoming Chair? The art of observation. Watching my mentors was the best education. No course could teach what they taught me.

What skill do you think everyone should learn? You are the decider, but you will have the respect of your team (especially the nurses) when they feel that they contribute to the outcome. It always comes back to listening.

What is your secret talent no one knows about? I am preparing for my next job as a professional bartender. It’s like chemistry class, only better.

What was the last book you read or movie you saw? Would you recommend it? Arrowsmith by Sinclair Lewis. You can thank me now.
